1. Don't Panic—Act Quickly
When a pipe bursts or a severe leak begins, the sheer volume of water can be terrifying. However, panicking will only waste precious seconds. Take a deep breath and follow these exact steps to mitigate the damage before the emergency plumber arrives.
2. Turn Off the Water at the Stopcock
This is the most critical step. Your first priority is to stop the flow of water into your property.
- Locate the Stopcock: In most UK homes, the internal stopcock is located under the kitchen sink. Other common locations include the downstairs toilet, utility room, under the stairs, or near the front door.
- Turn it Off: Turn the valve clockwise (to the right) as tightly as possible. If it hasn't been used in years, it might be stiff. Use a cloth for better grip if necessary.
- If you live in a flat: You may share a communal stopcock. Ensure you know where your individual isolation valve is before an emergency happens.
3. Drain the System
Even after turning off the stopcock, water will remain in your pipes. To prevent this water from continuing to leak, you need to drain the system.
Turn on all the cold taps in your home (starting from the top floor and working your way down) and flush the toilets. This will empty the pipes and drastically reduce the amount of water escaping from the leak.
4. Turn Off the Electrics (If Safe)
Water and electricity are a lethal combination. If the leak is near light fittings, sockets, or electrical appliances, go to your consumer unit (fuse box) immediately.
Turn off the main power switch. Do not touch any wet electrical switches or appliances. If you cannot reach the consumer unit safely without stepping in water, evacuate the immediate area and wait for a professional.
5. Protect Your Possessions
Once the water is off and the electrics are secured, start moving vulnerable items away from the leak. Prioritise electrical goods, important documents, and expensive furniture. Lay down towels, buckets, or heavy-duty plastic sheeting to catch any residual dripping.
6. Call a 24/7 Emergency Plumber
Now that the immediate danger is contained, you need professional help to fix the source of the problem. When calling an emergency plumber, provide as much detail as possible:
- Where is the leak located?
- Is the water hot or cold?
- Have you managed to turn the stopcock off?
At Stones & Co Construction, our emergency plumbers are stationed across London and aim to be at your door within 60 minutes. We carry common replacement parts to ensure we can stop the leak and repair the pipe on our first visit.
7. Document the Damage for Insurance
Once the situation is under control, take clear photos and videos of the damage to the pipe, ceiling, floors, and any ruined possessions. This evidence will be vital when submitting a claim to your home insurance provider.
